COURSE OVERVIEW: 

The Chaplain and Crisis course provides students with a deep understanding of crisis theory, intervention strategies, and counseling techniques to effectively support individuals facing challenging situations. Through a combination of theoretical lectures, case studies, and practical exercises, students will develop the skills needed to assist individuals in times of crisis, trauma, and post-traumatic stress. The course also explores cultural competence in crisis response, ethical considerations, and self-care practices for chaplains and caregivers.  

This class offers a comprehensive approach to crisis intervention and counseling, providing students with practical skills and theoretical knowledge to effectively support individuals in challenging situations.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

1. Understand the theoretical foundations of crisis theory and intervention. 

2. Learn effective counseling techniques for individuals in crisis. 

3. Develop skills in disaster response and trauma support. 

4. Recognize the importance of cultural competence in crisis assistance. 

5. Explore cognitive behavioral and family theories in crisis counseling. 

6. Practice ethical decision-making in crisis situations. 

7. Identify warning signs of domestic violence and how to address them. 

8. Implement self-care practices to prevent burnout and compassion fatigue. 

9. Prepare for real-world crisis scenarios through student presentations and case studies. 

10. Cultivate a holistic approach to chaplaincy and crisis intervention, promoting healing and resilience in individuals facing adversity.

Week 13: Exploring Ethical Issues in Counseling

Week 15: Final Class Emphasizing Self-Care Practices
